IELTS

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing system. It is a test that is accepted most widely in English speaking countries for a variety of purposes. This test is conducted by IDP and British council under the aegis of Cambridge University. This test has two formats: Academic and General. The Academic IELTS is required for the students who want to pursue their education abroad. For being eligible, they need a set band or score which falls generally between 6 and 8, the highest possible being band 9. The General IELTS is taken by those looking for work permit or PR abroad and here again the range is from band 6 to band 8. Whatever the case, the student has to prepare themselves for all four modules which are Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Listening and Reading are receptive skills which are aimed at checking the students’ understanding of the language. Speaking and Writing are productive skills which show the students’ dexterity in using the language across a range of situations.

The Listening module includes playing an audio in English language accompanied by a question paper of 40 questions. The task here is to understand the audio and to answer the questions thereon, keeping in mind the instructions given. The Reading module includes a test consisting of three sections of descriptive paragraphs. The student’s job is to answer the questions given in the test, relating them to the text provided, abiding by the instructions given. The Writing module has two tasks. The first one is a letter in case of General test takers and a map or bar diagram etc. for Academic test takers. The second task is an essay to be written based on the question provided. The Spoken module incorporates three parts. The first is about some introductory questions, the second a cue card and the third one comprises of discussion questions. Overall, it is a 2 hours 15 minutes test which is divided in 40 minutes of Listening, 1 hour of Reading, 1 hour of Writing and 11 to 14 minutes of Speaking.
