Pearson Test of English – Academic i.e. PTE-A is a computer based test. This test is accepted in various educational institutions of English speaking countries around the world.

PTE-A is a test which is based on day to day English and is aimed at assessing the candidate’s ability to effectively understand and respond in English on a range of topics. It, being a computerised test, is assessed more quickly than TOEFL and IELTS and normally within 2 days of taking the test, the results are declared.

PTE test is of 3 hours and is comprised of 3 main parts; the Speaking and Writing test (in conjunction), the Listening test and the Reading test. There are 20 different question formats which are a collection of multiple choice questions, essay writing, interpreting information etc. The accents used in this test range from natives like American, British, Australian etc. to non-natives like those of commonwealth countries so as to prepare the candidate on a variety of speaking patterns.

Part 1 of PTE is Speaking and writing (collective) which is of 72-93 minutes. This section starts with a personal introduction and then different types of questions appear on the screen to be answered. The question types are; read aloud, repeat sentence, describe image, re-tell lecture, answer short question, summarise written test and write an essay.

Part-2 deals with reading which takes 32-40 minutes to accomplish. Since this is an integrated skill test, thus is about some writing skill as well. The questions that this section comprises of are; reading and writing – fill in the blanks, multiple choice –choose multiple answers, re-order paragraphs. Multiple choice- single answer.

Part-3 of this test has audio or video extracts followed by questions. The extracts are not repeated but the candidate can take notes. This part runs for 45-57 minutes. The audio or video runs automatically. However, you have control over the volume of these. The question types are; multiple choice-multiple answer, fill in the blanks, highlight correct summary, select the missing word, highlight incorrect words and write from dictation.
